Qatar Airways: Future Plans

Recently, CEO of Qatar Airways Akbar Al-Baker announced their future plans including orders for over 200 aircraft at more than $30 billion. The airline is soon to receive delivery of its third 777 and will receive its first 777-200LR which will bring with it the ability to fly to virtually any city in the world from the airline's hub at Doha.

The new airport under construction in Doha will also contribute to the growth with its first phase due to open in 2010. The first phase will ensure an initial capacity of 24 million yearly passengers with the second and final phase, due 2015, to ensure capacity for 50 million yearly passengers. Other sources say the airport could open as early as 2009 however with a capacity of only 12 million passengers until further phases.

As CEO Al-Baker said, “Qatar Airways’ young fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, which have an average age of just three years, will grow significantly to 70 by the end of 2008, rising further to 110 within five years. The number of global destinations in the airline’s international network, which currently stands at 82, will also rise sharply over the next few years.”
