30 Month Delay Expected for RJ's 787s

Royal Jordanian Airlines is expecting a delay of up to 30 months for the introduction of its first Boeing 787 as a result of the production setbacks recently disclosed by Boeing.

The carrier has ordered 12 of the type, eight of which it will obtain through lease , and had been scheduled to take its first airframe in 2010.

Boeing stated earlier this month that the 787’s first flight would be postponed until the fourth quarter of this year with first deliveries being pushed back to the third quarter of 2009.

Royal Jordanian chief executive Samer Majali, speaking as the airline disclosed its first-quarter financial results, said that its first 787 would be delayed by “one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half years”.

The constant delays have become almost or normality in the aviation industry with the first A380s being delivered around two years late. Hopefully the situation won't be as extreme with future airliners.

Majali says the airline is negotiating to secure alternative aircraft to fill capacity on the carrier’s network in the interim period.
