Kleyate Airport to Open within 24hrs.

Update: Lebanese officials said Kleyate Airport will not start operations.

The Chairman of the Public Works and Transportation Parliamentary Committee MP Mohammad Qabbani said on the afternoon of Thursday May 8:

"As the Chairman of the of the Public Works and transportation parliamentary Committee, I am calling on the government to implement an earlier decision to declare Kleyate Airport as Rene Muawad International Airport and to inform international organizations immediately. This airport is ready for action within 24 hours, including the terminal building and it meets the International requirements."

He added: "Rafik Hariri Airport will always remain our source of pride, but there is no reason why Lebanon should not have another International airport."

There is a risk of the current presence on the airport road becoming a tent occupation like the one in downtown Beirut, therefor the government is being urged to use water hoses to disperse the groups. In light of this occupation and the closure of the airport, it is necessary and appropriate to open KYE to international operations. As this has been declared feasible by Qabbani and he has called for it, hopefully we will see KYE opening by tomorrow and the situation resolving itself with KYE remaining available incase of similar situations in the future.

Kleyate Airport has not been operational for many many years and hopefully its opening will present a new spotting opportunity for the Lebanese aviation enthusiast community. It is sad this occasion has to come under these sad circumstances.
